What is the Coinbase Wallet extension?

A browser wallet gives you a way to manage supported digital assets and interact with decentralized applications (dapps) from a compatible browser. Coinbase Wallet is a self-custody wallet: you control access to its recovery credentials. It is separate from a Coinbase exchange account, which is a custodial service with different sign-in and account-recovery processes.

That distinction matters. A wallet extension does not make a transaction risk-free, guarantee a token’s value, or reverse a transfer once it has been confirmed on a blockchain. Your assets and permissions are controlled by the wallet keys, while network fees and transaction details depend on the blockchain and the app you use. Treat the extension like a keyring: convenient, powerful, and worth protecting.

Get started: install and set up carefully

1. Start from an official source. Type the Coinbase website address yourself or use a trusted bookmark, then follow its link to the wallet and supported browser extension. Check the publisher, spelling, and permissions before installing. Search ads, unsolicited messages, look-alike domains, and “support agents” who ask you to install remote-access software are not reliable shortcuts.

2. Create or import a wallet. Open the extension and follow its current on-screen setup. If you create a new wallet, the app will provide recovery information; if you import an existing wallet, use only the official extension flow. Never enter a recovery phrase into a website, chat, email, or form. Coinbase support will not need your phrase to troubleshoot an issue.

3. Secure your device and confirm access. Choose a strong device password, enable your browser’s security updates, and use a password manager if appropriate. Read every prompt before granting permissions. Learn how the wallet’s current recovery process works and keep your recovery phrase offline in a private, secure place. Do not save a screenshot or cloud note containing it.

4. Verify before moving value. Explore the wallet controls first. If you later make a transaction, test with a small amount only when it makes sense for the network and fees. Confirm the destination address, selected network, and asset in the wallet itself—not solely on the site that requested the transaction.

03

Fund your wallet without rushing

To receive an asset, choose the receive option in your wallet and check which network and asset are selected. Copy the displayed address or use a QR code, then compare the first and last characters after pasting it into the sending service. A valid address on one network may not be appropriate for another. Sending to the wrong network or address can result in permanent loss, so do not guess.

When sending from an exchange account, select a network supported by both the sending service and the destination wallet. Network fees are separate from the amount you send and can change with demand. Be wary of unsolicited “verification,” “unlocking,” or “activation” payments; do not send funds just because a message claims you must pay to access your wallet. Check transaction status using the wallet’s activity view or a reputable block explorer reached independently.

04

Connect to apps and review every request

A dapp may ask you to connect before it can show wallet-specific information. A connection is not the same as sending a transaction, but it can reveal your public wallet address and associated on-chain activity to that site. Visit apps by typing a known address or following a source you already trust. Inspect the domain carefully; a familiar logo does not prove a site is genuine.

When a signature or transaction appears, slow down. Read the action, token, amount, destination, network, and any permissions requested. Some approvals let a contract spend tokens later; avoid unlimited allowances when a smaller permission is available, and periodically review and revoke approvals you no longer need using a trusted tool. A signature can authorize meaningful actions even if it does not display a network fee. If you cannot understand a request, reject it and verify through the app’s official documentation.

Security habits that protect your wallet

  • ✓
Keep recovery information private. Anyone with your recovery phrase may be able to control the wallet. No legitimate helper needs you to disclose it.
  • ✓
Use official support routes. Find help through Coinbase’s own website. Ignore unsolicited direct messages and calls promising to recover funds.
  • ✓
Check the details, not just the button. A malicious page can imitate a familiar brand. Verify URLs, recipients, networks, and permissions independently.
  • ✓
Protect your browser. Update your operating system and browser, remove extensions you do not use, and avoid wallet activity on shared devices.
  • ✓
Be skeptical of urgency. Giveaways, guaranteed returns, airdrop claims, and countdowns are common pressure tactics—not proof of legitimacy.
Your recovery phrase is the master key.

Never share it—even with someone claiming to be Coinbase support.

Troubleshooting and next steps

If the extension does not appear, confirm it is installed in the browser profile you are using, then restart the browser and check for updates from the browser’s official extension manager. If a dapp cannot see your wallet, verify the browser and network are supported, refresh the page, and reconnect only after checking the site address. Avoid downloading “fix” files or granting screen access to strangers.

If a transaction is pending, check its status on the relevant network before trying again; repeating a transaction may create another transfer. If you suspect compromise, use a clean device and official support instructions to secure your accounts and move remaining assets only when you understand the steps. Blockchain transactions usually cannot be canceled by support. Keep transaction IDs and dates for reference, but never include recovery credentials in a support request.

Self-custody gives you direct control and direct responsibility. Take time to learn the basics with small, deliberate steps. For the latest product details, supported browsers, and verified help options, start from Coinbase’s official Wallet page and navigate to its help resources from there.
